Marine biotopes enrich the fauna and flora of Salou

Salou. Costa Dorada. 29 July 2019. Salou already has 14 marine biotopes after July 29, 2019, 6 have been installed on the beach of Ponent. These are structures built almost artisanal with natural cement, which promote biodiversity and marine life and flora.

Biotopes are an initiative of the Repsol company that finances its construction and installation throughout the Tarragona coast since 2012, so that every summer donates to a coastal city council. This year he has played the turn of Salou that already had other structures of this type. In total the capital of the Costa Dorada has 4 located in Cap Salou and 10 along the beach of Ponent.

The company responsible for building these biotopes has been Arte Arte Reef, and the price of each is about 2,5000 euros. For its part, the city council that receives them is in charge of its proper conservation and maintenance, in charge of the company Sealan on off Shore SL.

Biotopes are small habitats that help maintain a specific series of living beings, small fish, algae, etc. It is an ideal place for both flora and fauna to enjoy the best conditions to live, grow and reproduce. Its construction is practically manual with mortar, so no biotope is not the same.

The most common sizes revolve around a height of between 1.5 and 2 m and a width of 1.5 m and its weight oscillates between 1,500 and 2,500 kg. The shape varies depending on the depth and geography of the point where they are implanted.

According to the mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, "the wealth of the seabed and the optimum health of our beaches is very important to us, both from the environmental and sustainable and tourist point of view, since our intention is to enhance our waters for the Practicing nautical and sports activities throughout the year, very attractive and enriching, such as snorkeling or swimming, in competitions such as triathlons".

For his part, the Managing Councilor for Land Management, Marc Montagut, said that "it is very positive that we show initiatives like this and that we have good sponsors that will help us to make our tourist offer more attractive around the beaches , our main strong point on which we can work to achieve a better performance, promoting its benefits. The seabed is a great unknown and with biotopes it becomes a foreground, to show it and teach it in water activities for all ages ".

Beacons for the bath area

Biotopes also serve to place beacons that point to the bath area and separate it from the navigation area. By means of a double buoy system (one intermediate and another on the surface) this biological system allows to improve the traditional marking beam that is made by buoys subject to 3 blocks of cement of 90 kilos that are located in the bottom of the sea only during the season Summer, since they are put and taken out every summer.
